Presently, a frantic race is taking place aimed at gaining a position in the rapidly evolving market of on-line music.
The race has a double venue: U.S. and Europe. In the U.S., December witnessed the launching of two platforms – Pressplay and MusicNet – respectively owned by recording labels SONY and UNIVERSAL, and BMG and WARNER. In Europe there are two large independent platforms, Weblisten and Vitaminic, the latter being based in Italy. However, there is a major difference between them. Whereas the former offers music by all artists, the latter, initially an independent music platform, has later on entered into agreements with some recording companies in the United States.
Weblisten.com is an on-line music platform owned by Weblisten, S.A., a company based in Madrid, Spain, which is able to offer music by all artists as a result of the licenses granted by authors and artists and the copyright payments made to the relevant recording companies. Its subscribers are mainly Europeans. Its target group is formed mostly by people aged 25-30 years, 60% of them Spanish, 35% from the Nordic countries and the UK and 5% from the United States, although US citizens have been gradually increasing lately.
Contrary to US platforms, which must regulate their licenses in Europe in order to be able to offer their services in this continent, licenses granted to Weblisten allow it to offer a global service without boundaries restrictions. Currently, it offers a base of 125,000 tracks categorized by music style, and several customized subscriber services. Thus, ‘BONOMÚSICA’ gives access to the entire catalog for one month, ‘BONOWEEKEND’ allows this same access during weekends and ‘BONONIGHT’ offers the same access during the night in Europe, daytime in the U.S. There is also available a download service of the most recent launches made by artists, called ‘BONOHIT’.
Even if there is a portion of this market which is held by free exchange programs, users are more and more opting for services that offer certain guarantees and do not cause trouble to their computer equipment by installing spy programs, which are the only source of financing available to peer-to-peer programs, without their consent. In that respect, Weblisten has been noticing for the last six months the return of users who had migrated to this type of exchange service.
